Clip videos from Kick, Loom, Dropbox, Google Drive, LinkedIn and more, not just YouTube

Katto now takes links from 13 places plus any direct video file URL. What works, what doesn't, and how to share a file so the link opens.

Clip videos from Kick, Loom, Dropbox, Google Drive, LinkedIn and more, not just YouTube

Until this week, Katto took links from six places: YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo, Zoom, Rumble and Dailymotion. Everything else meant downloading the file and uploading it again, which is slow when the file is a two-hour recording sitting in someone's Drive.

You can now paste a link from:

SourceWhat worksWhat to check first
KickPast broadcasts (VODs) and clipsA live channel page doesn't work; use the VOD link once the stream ends
Medal.tvPublic game clips—
LoomShared videos (loom.com/share/…)The video must be shared publicly, not workspace-only
DropboxShared file linksSharing set to "anyone with the link"
Google DriveShared filesSharing set to "anyone with the link"; very popular files can hit Google's download limit
LinkedInVideos in public postsThe post must be public
FacebookPublic videos and ReelsPublic only; Facebook blocks many automated downloads, so a public link can still fail
A direct link to a video fileAny https://…/file.mp4 (also .mov, .webm, .mkv)The link must point to the file itself, not to a page that plays it

They join the six that were already there. Hover the ? next to the link box in Katto to see the full list at any time.

What doesn't work, and what to do instead

  • X (Twitter). We tested it and public videos no longer download without a logged-in account. We left it out rather than ship something that fails half the time. Download the video and upload the file.
  • Riverside and StreamYard. Recordings sit behind your studio login. Export the recording, then upload it, or paste the YouTube link if you streamed there.
  • Frame.io. Review links are usually private. Download the original and upload it.
  • Private or members-only videos, anywhere. Katto can only fetch what a logged-out visitor could watch.

Limits are the same as for YouTube

A link from Dropbox counts exactly like a YouTube link: one video from your monthly allowance, up to 30 minutes on the free plan, 60 on Solo and 90 on Creator. Katto measures the real length after downloading, because some of these services don't announce it.

Why the direct file link took the most work

"Paste any URL and our server fetches it" is also how a server gets tricked into fetching things it shouldn't, like addresses on its own internal network. Before downloading a direct link, Katto checks that it is HTTPS, that it points to a public internet address and not a private one, and it checks every redirect again. We tested fifteen hostile links against it; all fifteen were refused.

Each new source was tested end to end on the live service before this post went up: a real link, a real download, real clips at the end. If a link you expect to work doesn't, the error message says why. Most of the time it's the sharing setting.
